Hustle and Flow - 8/21/10
No, this isn't a review of the 2005 pimp-turned-rapper film. It's Sound of Thought, not Reviews with Music, so this will be yet another philosophical rumination on the nature of the universe. You see, lately I've been thinking that maybe all of life is a lot like the "hustle" part of a song. It's the build-up, the non-melodic lyrics, the busy PUSH towards the "flow" which is, and always has been, the best PART of a song. So, in this analogy, death would obviously be the chorus. We are all engaged in a celestial piece of music that we're unaware of. All of evolution, all of sentience and progress, whether as a species or as an individual, is merely setting the stage for the wonderful chorus that will be our deaths. We can enjoy our lives, no doubt, there are often parts of the hustle I immensely enjoy in the song, but mostly only in relation TO the chorus. These parts work so well because there's a chorus to accompany it, to put it in perspective, to give it clarity, resonance, and soul. The chorus frees the lyrics or music from their arbitrary paths and grounds them in a firm embodiment that makes sense. It establishes a purpose to the song that would otherwise be chaotic, joyless, and, ultimately, meaningless. I truly feel that our deaths will define our lives in a way we can't even begin to comprehend. Everything will become clear to us, and we will finally enjoy the beautiful piece of music that was our lives because we'll finally hear and recognize the chorus that proceeds the death of our physical bodies. And because we waited so long to get to the "flow" part of the song, it will be that much more powerful, the beauty will be that much more profound, and the effect on our consciousness will be that much more transcendent. So envy those that live long lives, as their experiences, their memories, and the totality of who they are will add immeasurably to the symphony of emotion that awaits them in their heaven.
